10/24/17 Houston Artists

It's been confirmed, the Houston Astros are officially going to the World Series! In honor of the Astros, Houston, and our decisive victory over the New York Yankees- I want to do songs and artists from my great hometown of Houston, Texas! And in case you didn't know, there are a LOT of artists from Houston. Beyonce, Robert Earl Keen, Kenny Rogers, ZZ Top, and Chamillionaire just to name a few. So to honor the Houston Astros going to the World Series, with their 4-0 victory over the Yankees, this week will be all about Houston and Houston-based artists. Here at MericaNotes, we don't talk to Dodgers fans. #LetsGoAstros

ZZ Top
First off, I already love ZZ Top. The fact that bassist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons is from here is even more so a reason to listen to the Texas Rock band. ZZ Top has the ability to still keep performing as well as they did in the 80s. Everybody loved the 80s; we had Nolan Ryan, Ronald Reagan, MTV, and ZZ Top. ZZ Top's hard southern rock sound and trademark beards made them so iconic, a style that is unique to the Houstonian group and remains a rather interesting bit of history for the city still today.

Beyonce
Beyonce is a talented artist, I admit that. She's got a great set of pipes on her, but what's truly amazing is that Destiny's Child, the 90s pop group, has managed to remain in relevancy for over 20 years. Beyonce is a great singer, one of the few pop artists today with actual talent. Most guys would only admit to liking Beyonce if their life depended on it, but I'd say Beyonce is a great artist. Personally, I like her older music more than I do anything new she's put out within the past couple years- but that's just me.

Robert Earl Keen
Robert Keen is arguably the greatest storyteller in all of country music- perhaps even music in general. His unparalleled ability to invoke imagery, emotion, and tell a story all at once are truly amazing. Keen has gone from playing at small venues across Texas to touring all across the US. Robert Keen has this outstanding voice that just sort of entraps you, and it makes you listen closely to every detail and every word. There's a story in every song he does, as well as heart. When Robert Earl Keen plays, whether its a cover by Lyle Lovett, or an original like "Mr Wolf And Mama Bear" you already know that Keen is going to bring everything he's got and pour his heart and soul into the music he performs.

Kenny Rogers
Rogers is undoubtedly greatly influential in both country music and pop culture. The Houston born singer, songwriter, actor, record producer, and entrepreneur has had his share of share of fame. Yet, Rogers is as down to Earth as it gets. His bestselling album "The Gambler" contained the song of the same name; which would go on to become Roger's number one most requested song. That same album reached the Rolling Stones "Top 200 Most Influential Albums".

Chamillionaire
I didn't really know who Chamillionaire was until recently (until just about five minutes ago when I was researching who he was on Google) but it seems to me like a lot of people do like the music he puts out. Not only is his music good, but he's one of the few rappers I can actually call a good human being. As stated from his website chamillionaire.com, "I created a Youcaring campaign to help provide assistance for a lot of families that have been severely impacted by all of the devastation that Hurricane Harvey has caused. I am a musician, but I am also a Houston native and I am completely heartbroken after witnessing what this flooding has done to disrupt the lives of so many hard working families and people." I was surprised to see how much money was being donated to Harvey relief, over $44,000 raised to help out the families here in Houston affected by the hurricane. I may not be a fan of Chamillionaire's music, but I'm a fan his good character- and at the end of the day, that's what matters more.

Travi$ Scott

My friend Chris is a big fan of mumble rap, a genre which Travis Scott has almost entirely taken over (along with the likes of Lil Yachty, Desiigner, Migos, and Logic). Personally I can't stand mumble rap. To me it sounds like a drunkard trying to talk whose gone several days without adequate sleep. But, being another native Houstonian, I give Scott a little bit of a thumbs up on that. Since 2012 Scott has been producing music which has seen multiple slots in the Billboard Top 100; his 2015 single "Antidote" from the ironically named album "Rodeo" was ranked in the top 20 of the Billboard 100 playlist.
